It’s a tale as old as time; girl meets boy, girl hires boy, they fall madly in love + run away to make croissants together in Maine for the rest of their days. No? You haven’t heard that one before? Oh, okay…. I guess we’ll backtrack….
What began as a are-you-sure-we-haven’t-known-eachother-our-whole-lives-friendship and work relationship flourished into much more than either of us could have ever bargained for. After a crazy year we packed our whole lives up and moved to Camden, Maine, determined to spend our days happy; making pastries, playlists (you’ll probably hear a lot of Talking Heads) + laughing together. We specialize in sweet + savory comfort pastries (Chris has referred to Chelsea’s food as “fancy Grandma food” since we met). We use only local flours, dairy + produce (some grown in our own yard + neighborhood in the Summertime). Our micro-bakery, is built in an old workshop where local Camden highschool sweethearts lived + grew old together spending their free time woodworking and crafting. We hope to make many beautiful things in the shop for years to come; just like Gypsie + George did before us.
CHRIS DAWSON - Bread Whisperer - Chelsea leveler -
loves: ridiculous 80s movies, concord grapes, the talking heads, tartar sauce (and some fried clam strips with it), his dogs, chelsea, giant pumpkins, vanity plates, reese’s, tiny pickles, dinosaurs.
hates: tristate area traffic and throw pillows (there used to be a bunch of foods until Chelsea changed his mind)
loves: her dogs (and most dogs), ice cream, Chris, summer berries, photography, design, the smell of the ocean, labor unions, the talking heads, butter, reading aloud, ruining surprises.
hates: spitting, people who are rude to service workers, non mammals (they freak me out man!), camels and llamas (see:spitting)
CHELSEA KRAVITZ - Butter Lady - The Person you’re waiting for to email you back -
KODAK - HR SPECIALIST -
loves: kisses and hugs, yelling at the mail carrier, stealing treats, escapism, kittens, standing like a human, being told she’s a pretty girl.
hates: the mail carrier, being told no, rules, Karl’s giggle ball, being disturbed when she’s tired
BABY KARL - CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE MANAGER -
loves: being called baby karl, friends, C&C, snuggles, being told he’s a good boy, his giggle ball, removing the squeakers from toys, snacks, holding hands, swimming (aka: swim swim), his aunt Bebes, his chuck-it toy.
hates: when everyone is too busy or tired to play, spooky things, getting less attention than Buck & Kodak, not being able to destroy the giggle ball

“On one hand, I want the world to know about you... you should be in Downeast mag! NY Times! But I also want you to remain a small, secret spot... Love your stuff (terribly addictive)!”

“Once you eat pastry from "The Place" nothing else matters in the world and all grievances and anxieties disappear. Even if only for a brief moment, in that paradigm everything is beautiful. The Kouign-Amann took me there, the wife as well. Haha Morning Bun? More like "Good Morning Hun" 🤙”
-JONATHAN P.
“Was honored to receive a sample of a few of their treats! Wow, just wow!”
— BEVERLY DOHERTY
“Laminated pastries are having a moment right now all over North America, with dexterous bakers flexing their buttery prowess across a spectrum of different pastries. At the Place, a tiny bakery in Camden, Maine, the ethereally flaky croissant dough (made with local flour and butter) appears in many forms and flavors — swirled into cinnamon buns, folded and sugared into kouign-amanns, layered into loaves. The offerings change weekly, in tune with the seasons and available produce. Which means you’ll have to wait until summer for the savory heirloom tomato Danishes and wild blueberry hand pies. Happily, pastries like the ham and cheese croissants and morning buns dusted with coriander and lemon will tide you over until then.”
